During gas pipeline replacement works carried out as part of public utility development in Kaposvár, the root systems of a plane tree (Platanus spp.) avenue along the affected street were significantly damaged. The resulting root loss adversely affected both the structural stability of the trees and their ability to absorb water and nutrients.

All interventions were preceded by detailed tree assessments, during which the extent of root damage, overall tree condition, and associated risks were evaluated individually. Based on the findings, proportional crown reduction was deemed necessary to restore the balance between the root system and the canopy, and to reduce the risk of tree failure and branch breakage.

In total, 19 trees underwent professional crown reduction using both rope access techniques and mobile elevated work platforms (MEWP). Throughout the works, particular attention was paid to species-specific pruning principles, the selection of appropriate pruning points, and the preservation of the trees’ long-term health.

The objective was to establish a more stable and safer tree avenue that can sustainably adapt to the challenges of the urban environment despite the imposed stresses.
